A few hours after Malmö FF secured the Swedish Championship gold yesterday in the 4-0 win over Sirius, MFF announced that team captain Anders Christiansen tested positive for covid-19, leading the Scanians to cancel the gold dinner.
– Anders didn’t feel anything before the game. He put in a lot of effort on the field, celebrated afterward and conducted interviews, but when his adrenaline subsided he felt listless and his stomach ached. When the other players left by bus, Anders stayed with our team doctor and had a quick test that came back positive, sports director Daniel Andersson said in a comment on the club’s website.
On Sirius, however, there is no major concern after the MFF captain left a positive covid test yesterday.
– We tested the whole team at the end of last week, before the game against Malmö we had a player who was infected by the crown. But none of the results from the players for whom we received responses was positive. So far it only indicates that it is a player with us that was infected and that we were able to isolate that player so quickly that there was no spread on our team, says Sirius team doctor Jakob Johansson.
– We had a player who did not go down to Malmö due to cold symptoms, but he was also negative. We have no indication that someone else is infected.
Will you do any further testing in light of MFF’s message on Christiansen?
– No, we won’t for the moment. The exposure is so small in this case. It is much worse for Malmö himself, who has had the player in the dressing room, etc., then there will be more exposure. The fact that we have played against a player sick with covid does not mean that we are going to test everyone. We continue to monitor symptoms and well-being on a daily basis and test if anyone should develop symptoms.
You don’t seem that worried.
– No, I wouldn’t say that. There was a greater cause for concern when we had one of our own infected. Christiansen were said to have no symptoms when he played and if you do not have symptoms, you are much less contagious compared to someone who sneezes and coughs. We take the day to day and see how the squad feels. The Christiansen case does not lead us to change our routines, we continue with our daily routines where we check how our players and leaders feel. But we don’t do extensive testing at the moment.
With three rounds to play, Sirius ranks ninth in the Allsvenskan.
