President Donald Trump was emotionally unprepared for an electoral defeat, according to media reports.
So it came as a surprise when Fox News on election night proclaimed Joe Biden the winner in Arizona. Florida’s early results looked very promising, so Trump hoped for victory. But then came Arizona.
– The feeling of enthusiasm and joy was totally pricked. They desperately tried to contact them to have the evaluation withdrawn. But it led nowhere, says New York Times journalist Maggie Haberman on “The Daily” podcast.
Trump sat at home in the White House and followed the reports with his family and a few advisers. His son-in-law and advisor Jared Kushner called Rupert Murdoch, owner of Fox News, but to no avail.
The electoral figures seemed worse and worse, but in the first days it was not entirely calculated.
At around 10 a.m. on Saturday, he heads to his golf club in Sterling, about 25 miles from the White House. By then, he has already tweeted his baseless allegations of electoral fraud.
“At the time, he radiated confidence. It was a wonderful day, perfect for golf … but the people who worked for him seemed very excited.” writes Tara McKelvey, a BBC reporter who has been reporting from the White House for the past four years.
Delays on the golf course
Around 11:30 a.m., the mainstream media begins announcing Joe Biden as the winner, based on the vote count in Pennsylvania. The BBC reporter and other journalists wait at an Italian restaurant near the golf club.
Trump is in no rush to return to the White House. In and around the golf club, he is surrounded by friends and supporters.
“Stop the robbery!” says on a poster a woman is holding. It refers to the alleged “theft” of votes. A man waves a flag with an image of Trump standing on top of a tank, ready to fight all enemies.
Celebrate the fall of Trump
Finally, the president’s automobile convoy begins driving back to Washington, and there he meets another view. The closer they get to the White House, the more crowds turn out to celebrate Trump’s downfall.
