Just before 1:00 a.m. local time, the night between Thursday and Friday, Donald Trump broke the news on Twitter:
He and his wife Melania Trump had tested positive for COVID-19.
Almost 35 hours later, just before 12 noon local time on Saturday, Trump’s personal physician, Sean Conley, held a press conference in front of Walter Reed Military Hospital.
Physician: 72 hours after diagnosis
There he said:
– It takes 72 hours after diagnosis.
Another doctor, Brian Garibaldi, said:
– About 48 hours ago, the president received special antibody therapy.
72 hours ago it was in the middle of the day on Wednesday. 48 hours ago it was Thursday in the middle of the day.
Those dates do not match the previous message – that Trump tested positive only on Thursday night.
Confusion over Donald Trump’s diagnosis
It was noted by, among others, The Guardian who wrote:
“Either Dr. Sean Conley is wrong about the diagnosis, Trump was not told he had COVID-19 or he lied.”
Several American White House journalists also noted the confusion. For example, he wrote New York Times Maggie Haberman:
Conley says we have 72 hours of diagnosis. They told us around one in the morning on Friday that the president was positive, which was only 36 hours ago. “
NBC-journalisten Yamiche Alcindor wrote:
“Dr. Conley said Trump was symptomatic on Thursday and tested positive for covid-19 72 hours ago. 72? It’s Wednesday.”
The doctor responds: “Incorrect”
Later, the White House issued a clarifying statement from Conley. She says:
“I misused the terms ‘seventy-two hours’ instead of ‘day three’ and ‘forty-eight hours’ instead of ‘day two’ for their diagnosis and administration of polyclonal antibody therapy.”
Sean Conley writes that Trump received his diagnosis for the first time Thursday night and the antibody treatment on Friday.
