Navid Afkari, 27, is a successful fighter in Iran. Two years ago he participated in a protest, described as peaceful, against the country’s leadership.
The star was sentenced to two death sentences for murdering a security guard during the protest.
But he was reportedly tortured and forced to confess to a crime he did not commit.
His two brothers have been sentenced to 54 and 27 years in prison respectively in the same case, they too have been tortured.
Dana White, president of the UFC martial arts organization, is now working to save the fighter’s life.
-First, this man is a human being, secondly, he is one of us, he could be one of my fighters, says White in a video.
Trump: “Don’t run it”
He goes on to say that he got in touch with Donald Trump.
– My first thought was to call the president, to see if he could do something to help this man. “Let me take a closer look, let me talk to my administration and see if we can do something to save this man’s life,” he said.
Soon after, the president of the United States took to Twitter to plead for the life of Navid Afkari.
“To the leaders of Iran, I would be very grateful if you would forgive this man and not execute him. Thank you!“Trump writes.
Morgan Ortegus, spokesman for the US Department of State, on the verdict:
“We join in the global outrage at the Iranian regime’s death sentence against Navid Afkari, who was tortured for giving a false confession after participating in peaceful demonstrations in 2018. The regime also tortured his two brothers and sentenced them to several decades of prison. Let them go“
