The Dominican Republic will begin construction of a fence along the 376-kilometer border with Haiti later this year. The measure will curb unauthorized migration and illegal trade, according to President Luis Abinader.
“In two years, we want to stop the serious problems of illegal immigration, drug trafficking and the movement of stolen vehicles,” he told congress on Saturday.
It is unclear how much the project will cost. Construction will begin during the second half of the year.
In the most exposed parts of the border, the barrier will be built with a double fence with motion detectors, cameras with facial recognition and infrared systems.
Luis Abinader presented the news of the 177th anniversary of the independence of the Dominican Republic from Haiti. The two states share the island of Hispaniola.
The government estimates that around half a million Haitians live in the Dominican Republic, a large proportion of whom do not have a residence permit.
