It was in late June that Dollarstore opened its first store in Halmstad, although not without pain. Even before the opening day, the company had a big dispute with the municipality.

It was all about the fact that the new Dollarstore store premises had not received a final decision, but that the store had opened nonetheless. According to the municipality of Halmstad, documentation that the building was completed was missing, according to the municipality, the company would also have had to apply for a new building permit as important changes were implemented during the construction process.

Dollarstore, on the other hand, said that the changes that had taken place weren’t “that big” at all.

The construction in Halmstad does not meet the Dollarstore standard. We build simple tin boxes. From what I understand, the municipality did not like it. Obviously it should be a bit more pleasant in Halmstad, said then the manager of the establishment Fredrik Holmström.

Halmstad is the worst construction process we have ever had.

Now, the owner of the Dollarstore premises risks a fine of around SEK 570,000, as the municipality still believes the business is being conducted illegally without proper permission. Hallandsposten reports.

This is not a strange case. They have put the building into use without a final decision and have had clients there all summer, Leif Fendell, building manager and environmental stewardship, tells the newspaper.

But there is one thing that Dollarstore could do to prevent the property owner from paying the penalty.

You always have the opportunity to correct. In this case, it would mean emptying and restoring the premises, continues Leif Fendell.

However, this is not an alternative, says Fredrik Holmström.

You understand it yourself. There is no possibility that we will close and empty the premises.

We have been granted access in accordance with an agreement with the owner. The problem is between the owner and the municipality, not us. We are only tenants.

Hallandsposten has not been able to reach the owner for comment.
