Mart Luige, an advisor to Estonian Foreign Minister Urmas Reinsalu, visited Oslo with experts from Tallinn University of Technology prior to the broadcast of the film. At the time, materials that were not included in the documentary series were also screened.
Among other things, experts saw another large hole that they believe should have been included in the documentary, something that was first noticed by The news agency.
– It would have been fairer to publish everything they discovered. In this case, it leaves the impression of some kind of bias, says marine expert Tauri Roosipuu to Estonian ERR.
Several meters long
The hole the experts saw was horizontal, located further aft and close to the seabed. It appeared to be several meters long and a few decimeters wide. The marine expert believes that the documentaries did not include this hole because it would raise doubts about the collision theory.
Linus Andersson from Gothenburg was the one who drove the naval robot along the Estonian hull in the documentary. For him, the information about the second hole is nothing new.
– I can understand if anyone thinks it was a bit ugly not to include that other injury as well. But all the experts have had access to our material. They concluded that the second hole is not significant. We have not kept anything secret, he says and continues:
– It should be remembered that what we did was a journalistic investigation and not an accident investigation.
Different character
According to Linus Andersson, the second hole is of a completely different character than the one focused on in the documentary.
– The horizontal hole was probably caused by stress on weak points in the hull. This may have happened when the ship hit bottom or during the sinking process. But in any case, this is not a print damage of the kind we have shown, he says.
He himself does not want to draw any conclusions from the damage of the print, but says the film shows that proper research is needed with resources completely different from those of private documentary makers.
Estonia has stated that it wants to carry out a new investigation on the spot.
– I welcome that. I also sent material to Estonia and gave them advice on how to study the helmet in a systematic way.
In the following clip, the filmmakers discover the hole that the famous documentary is about:
