A Belgian anesthetist is sentenced to three years in prison for performing an emergency caesarean section while intoxicated, resulting in the death of the patient.
The cesarean section was performed at a hospital in the city of Pau, in southwestern France, in September 2014. The British pregnant woman had passed the time when she was sent to give birth.
The anesthesiologist who received him had started his new job just two weeks earlier. In court, he has admitted that he started the workday by drinking a mixture of vodka and water, which he said he did every day for ten years.
The doctor inserted a breathing tube into the woman’s esophagus and is also said to have used an oxygen mask instead of a breathing mask. The patient did not receive oxygen to the brain, woke up screaming during the procedure, and died four days later.
When the doctor was arrested after the operation, the amount of alcohol in his blood corresponded to a consumption of about ten glasses of wine. Previously, she had been fired from her medical job in Belgium for getting drunk on the job, something the recruiting company that hired her had not done.
The baby survived the chaotic birth. The convicted woman must pay damages to the relatives of the deceased mother.
