He has been singled out as the man behind the doping scandal at the 2019 World Ski Championships.
Now physician Mark Schmidt acknowledges how he has consistently helped athletes get high for eight years.
The trial against him is ongoing and Schmidt is risking five years in prison.
It was during the World Ski Championships in Seefeld, Austria in 2019 that the great doping scandal was revealed.
Police raided the championship and arrested a total of nine people suspected of doping crimes. Including the two local skiers Max Hauke and Dominik Baldauf. The first was caught with a needle in his arm during an ongoing blood transfusion.
Both drivers were suspended, but the doping scandal was not complete. Not much less.
“Dr. Doping” was the spider in the web
The person who was singled out as the main character is 42-year-old German physician Mark Schmidt.
“Dr. Doping,” as he was quickly called, has been in custody for over a year and a half, since the scandal was revealed, and the trial against him has now begun in Munich, Germany.
After three weeks of long and drawn-out negotiations, Schmidt admits in detail how he helped and doped various athletes.
Among other things, the 42-year-old has admitted that he has helped athletes systematically get high since 2012, and that it was mainly athletes and winter cyclists.
Accused of 150 different doping offenses
The prosecutor charges Schmidt with nearly 150 different doping offenses, and the German has pleaded guilty to the vast majority.
The doping scandal is described as one of Germany’s largest in many, many years, with more than 20 athletes involved in the current situation, and more names may emerge.
According to German Bild, a verdict in the case is expected just before Christmas. If Schmidt is found guilty of the crimes he is charged with, he risks up to five years in prison.
