Olivia Schough was part of the World Cup squad, but then ended up out of the national team, at the same time that it was quite difficult for the Djurgården club team.
Now he has returned to the national team, and on Thursday he was given the confidence to play from the start. He then scored goals and assists against Latvia.
Afterwards she was happy.
– It was very nice. A perfect pass from Anna (Anvegård) that I could only take with me and it was just to splash it there. It was incredibly nice. I forgot how it feels, he says.
What does it mean to take risks?
– It means a lot. I know the competition is fierce in my position and that it has been for a long time. Having the opportunity today was very important to me. So I tried to do the best I could and show myself. I’m very happy to have started and we’ll see what happens next.
Schough also said he has doubted he can return to the national team.
– Yes, I have had those days, but at the end of last season I decided that I had to step up. So I’ve trained harder and focused a lot on myself, just getting better. So it’s really fun to be with her again, she says.
What have you done in your training that has made you return to the national team?
– Last year we barely had physical participation in the club so I took advantage of it during this year. So now I have my own fitness trainer and it has worked really well for me. I feel like I’ve gotten stronger and faster, and that means I have the strength to take initiative all the time and I’ve built a faith in myself.
Why doesn’t the club want to help with physical training or physical trainers?
– We have two physical therapists who give us strength programs, but it’s not really the job of a physical therapist. So physiotherapists do their best, but of course it would have been better for us to have a physical trainer to take care of everything. But it is like this.
Magdalena Eriksson is impressed with Schough’s will, but also thinks it’s sad that the players themselves have to deal with things like fitness coaches in order to develop.
– First of all, it is an incredibly good initiative of Olivia to do it yourself and take that responsibility and make it work, says Eriksson and continues:
– But I also think it’s incredibly sad that it’s still necessary, and I don’t think only Djurgården had that problem, but it’s an incredible pity that it’s still like this at damallsvenskan. If you compare it to how we are in England, but of course there are other economic conditions, but where everything is in place and allows you to focus on yourself and that you should be able to go out and act. And that is what we want as footballers.
– Things like this can be expected to make clubs realize that they still want to push certain parts and that this is what is required to help players be able to perform at the highest level.
Magdalena Eriksson believes that clubs should be able to do more so that players can develop.
– There are an incredible amount of different parts that can be improved. But it is clear that it is a question of costs. It’s about getting a more equitable sponsorship, that some Swedish men’s clubs choose to invest more in their women’s teams and invest more in their women’s teams and understand the value of having a women’s team. Easier said than done, but clearly one wishes there were better conditions.
