Magnus Eriksson’s return in the blue striped shirt in late August was not entirely successful.
Eriksson played 90 minutes against the last team Helsingborg, a match Djurgården led 1-0 but the last half hour turned the home team into victory with 3-1.
Now 30-year-old Eriksson returned to the Tele2 stadium and faced league runner-up Elfsborg with 22-year-old Jesper Karlsson, the most popular Allsvenskan player who recently signed for Dutch AZ Alkmaar.
Karlsson immediately showed why he’s at the top of the Swedish shooting league and Elfsborg’s 1-0 counterattack was lightning fast.
Right-back Johan Larsson was noted for his seventh assist when he encountered Jesper Karlsson, who turned down Jacob Une Larsson and Elliot Käck before pushing the ball into Per Kristian Bråtveit’s right post.
– I cheated a bit defensively, admits the striker when interviewed on Dplay.
Karlsson took the goal as number one in the shooting league with ten goals along with Christoffer Nyman of Norrköping, adding four assists.
Djurgården clearly started Better and after three minutes Magnus Eriksson was giving the home team the lead, but the shot, after a clever corner variant, slipped just off Tim Rönning’s left post.
A couple of minutes later, he found Kalle Holmberg’s head with a wide post, but the wink was not at all of the same quality as the post.
Karlsson responded by taking a post that Per Frick headed into the net but referee Kaspar Sjöberg disallowed the goal when Frick went too strong for substitute midfielder Fredrik Ulvestad.
Despite the handicap, Djurgården’s first half was at times of the highest class.
– It is sloppy to go backhand after our own corner and we should have more quality at the end, says team captain Jesper Karlström.
Thomas Lagerlöf he was happy with his players.
– If we play that well, it will cost us a lot not to score goals.
Just over a minute into the second half, the Djurgård coach was right.
Now it was the home team that countered, Edward Chilufya released after a good deep pass from Jesper Karlström and was able to extend the tie to 1-1 between the legs of Tim Rönning.
– We are disappointed because, of course, we wanted to win, says Chilufya to Dplay after the match.
Djurgården had to relocate to the starting eleven when Erik Berg was sent off even before the game due to injury.
During the day of the match, Jonathan Augustinsson, Kevin Walker and Jesper Nyholm also disappeared due to injuries.
