It was predicted to be a close and tough final at the Australian Open. And so it was, but only in one set. Djokovic then easily took home the next two and beat Medvedev 7-5, 6-2, 6-2.
It was the Serbian world team’s ninth title at the Grand Slam tournament in Melbourne. He has never lost a final at the Australian Open. He also took his 18th Grand Slam title.
Then he praised the Melbourne Park tennis facilities, especially the main arena:
– I want to thank this track, Rod Laver Arena, I love you more every year, says Djokovic in the thank you speech.
Then he says, according to AFP, to the Australian television channel Channel Nine:
– Emotionally, it was one of the most difficult tournaments I played. They quarantined us and a lot happened in the media. The letter I wrote with recommendations for the players was misinterpreted as a demand letter. And then I was considered a persona non grata (not welcome) in this country, Djokovic tells the television channel.
– So it was difficult to handle everything. And then I got injured in the third round. It was like riding a roller coaster. But it probably makes me feel even better now, and I get along very positively with the tournament.
The abdominal muscle injury caused him to barely advance from the third round. However, he has been forced to refrain from training between games.
Unbeaten in 20 games
Medvedev was unbeaten in 20 games before the final. The world four won the ATP final in November, where they defeated Djokovic in the final in straight sets. And in Melbourne he had only lost two sets before the final.
– It’s amazing with your 20-game suite, says Djokovic about Medvedev, in the winning number, and continues the tribute.
– I like you, off the track you are always friendly. But on the track, you are one of the toughest I have ever met in my life. It won’t be long before you take home a Grand Slam title. But I would appreciate it if you could wait a few years.
The air is gone
The first set was very even. The players broke the opponent’s serve each time, but in the end it was Djokovic who managed to break the Russian’s serve a second time to take the set.
Then the air seemed to leave Medvedev, at the same time that Djokovic took on new energy and could easily take the set home. The Russian never recovered and the match ended in just under two hours.
– I wanted to make the game longer and funnier for you, Medvedev tells the audience in his thank you speech.
