Divide within KD on development aid money for institutions abroad

Few of the representatives of the Christian Democrats want to openly comment on what they think of the proposal to take SEK 1.8 billion from the development aid budget to build and renovate prisons abroad. According to information from SVT, there are many who are ashamed and want to avoid being involved in the issue.

Member of Parliament Desiree Pethrus says she hasn’t had time to take a position yet, but points out that there is often a debate about development aid.

-I was a bit surprised, but when I hear that the government has used money in Kenya for the construction of prisons, it may not be as strange as it seems. But spontaneously, you may feel that aid money shouldn’t be used that way. I hope we get more information and a deeper study of the subject, he says.

Several of the parliamentarians the SVT contacts say directly that they do not want to answer any questions.

– I choose not to comment it externally, since I have commented it internally and that is my answer, says the deputy Magnus Jacobsson.

“A matter of the heart”

Even at the local level, several politicians are unhappy with the fact that the proposal has come without warning.

– I haven’t heard of this before. The aid issue is a matter of the heart of our party, the kind of sensitive issues that I think should be anchored, says Elisabeth Lann, president of the International Christian Democratic Center (KIC) and city councilor in Gothenburg.

She is optimistic about the use of development aid money to strengthen the legal chain in other countries, but believes that the issue also contains an ethical dilemma.

– I have doubts that the money from development assistance will go to the Swedish prison service, says Elisabeth Lann.

KD: It has been well received.

KD press manager Per Gudmundsson writes in an email to SVT Nyheter that it is “sad that someone feels ignored.”

“The proposal has been well received and has led to an exciting debate both outside and within the party. As usual, there are different opinions on exactly how an optimal proposal should be designed, otherwise it would be useless to have a party political, but the amount of reaction here hardly differs from how it usually is when new policies are developed. ” he writes.
