Since Monday, Backaskolan in Kirseberg completely switched to distance learning for middle and high school. Elementary students are also offered the opportunity to study from home.
– We fear we had an internal spread of the infection, especially in high school, says Backaskolan principal Fredrik Håkansson.
The Backaskolan board made the decision this weekend to switch to distance education on a large scale.
All high school students will basically handle the rest of the fall term from home.
Malmö municipal primary schools still have teaching on site, with the exception of some secondary classes in Nydalaskolan which have switched to distance education due to the absence of staff.
But the independent Backaskolan board in Kirseberg decided this weekend to allow all middle and high school students to move on to distance education. The elementary school still has on-site teaching at the school, with the possibility of distance learning also for elementary students if parents wish.
Decision was made according to the director of Backaskolan after several students fell ill last weekend. Sampling is ongoing, but there are already confirmed cases of covid-19 among students and school staff.
– The board made the decision after we had several cases settled in a short time. We fear we had an internal spread of the infection, especially in high school, says principal Fredrik Håkansson.
The school has one class per year, from preschool to ninth grade.
This means that just over 150 students on Monday had to complete their studies from home for the first time.
– The first day has exceeded expectations. All students were on site on their computers and on time. The board has brought with them an infection doctor, who is one of the parents from the school. We have had that experience, says Fredrik Bengtsson.
