Monday’s decision means that distance education affecting the approximately 49,000 students and 7,000 university employees will continue until at least October 31.
– We comply with the directives and restrictions of the government and the government. If conditions change, it may be an earlier date, but it may also be an extension, says Eva Wiberg, rector of the University of Gothenburg.
You must make a decision.
It is precisely the uncertainty surrounding the pandemic that has prompted university management to step foot and make a decision now.
– All universities are dealing with this problem now. But in order for students and staff to plan their activities, it is important to have something to relate to and know what applies. That is why the decision was made, he says, and continues:
– It also means that in planning, one must be prepared to be able to quickly handle new decisions if conditions change. I think that has been proven in the spring, the adjustments have gone fast and have worked well, says Eva Wiberg.
There are exceptions
However, there are exceptions to the recent decision. This applies, for example, to certain items that require physical presence and that cannot be carried out in any other way.
– Of course with caution and with security measures, highlights Eva Wiberg.
Monday’s decision also means studies and internships abroad will be suspended during the fall period.
– That is the main rule. In addition to the risk of infection, it is difficult to be practical with closed borders and canceled flights. It is also a decision that we must make now for planning reasons, he says and continues:
– But international students just admitted to college should be able to offer temporary distance education as an alternative to on-campus teaching during the fall term, says Eva Wiberg.
“Assume the forces”
As a general rule, existing restrictions and recommendations for travel, conferences and visits remain at the beginning of the fall semester.
– As mentioned, the spring transition has been good. But it takes strength to change. It takes time to find new ways and I think everyone yearns to meet again, says Eva Wiberg.
