Discussions: Cleaning up the plastic surgery market

[ad_1]

The growing and lucrative The private market for cosmetic plastic surgery in Sweden is poorly regulated and patients have been injured. Cosmetic plastic surgery has not been covered by laws regulating health care and there has also been a lack of special competence requirements for performers. This, in turn, has created space for unscrupulous actors who have compromised with patient safety and have applied unethical marketing. Surgeons with specialized knowledge other than plastic surgery often perform plastic surgery operations and promote themselves as adequately trained to perform these procedures. In this context, on December 3, 2020, the Government presented a bill (Bill 2020/21: 57) on a new law on cosmetic surgical procedures and cosmetic injection treatments, which is proposed to enter into force on 1 July 2021. The bill means, among other things, the corresponding surgical specialty will be necessary to perform the different typing procedures in cosmetic surgery. The purpose of the law is to increase the safety of patients seeking cosmetic care in private.

There are regular reports in the media about patients who have suffered complications from cosmetic surgery. We also regularly see how the term plastic surgeon is misused. On October 5 of last year, Expressen and Aftonbladet reported how a “plastic surgeon” had his medical identification revoked due to causing bodily injury and incompetence. However, the doctor in question is a specialist in another surgical specialty and not in plastic surgery. The definition of a plastic surgeon is a physician who, after approved specialized service for at least five years, receives a plastic surgery specialist certificate issued by the National Board of Health and Welfare. The different surgical specialties have different areas of competence, which is why the new regulations want to specify the relevant specialty for the different typing procedures.
