Director Tomas Alfredson: “I’m ashamed as a dog”

“Beware the Jönsson League” has received several million grants from the Swedish Film Institute. A medium that, according to Tomas Alfredson, was essential for the film to be recorded at all. He himself has worked for almost three years on the film that was shot in the Stockholm area.

It is emphasized that the film investment is made in part with the common money of the Swedish people.

– This is so boring that SF could stick around and show it in a theater instead of selling it to a streaming service. These are the biggest competitors in the movie industry, he tells DN.

– This is like washing the entire film.

Tomas Alfredson's open letter was posted on the director's website.

Alfredson was reached by the message on Friday without prior discussion.

– Now the film does not reach the delights of the general public but ends up in a subscription service where you must be a member to see the film. It is not the same accessibility at all, he notes, adding that SF made the decision in a very short time and with little information.

– I find it very difficult to understand. If the movie had been possible to pay and watch as an individual screening without being a member, at least it would have been fairer. Instead, they push the audience to get a subscription to watch “Beware the Jönsson League.”

At the same time, cinemas are in a very vulnerable position as a result of the pandemic. Do you know when the film could be shown in theaters?

– Nobody knows anything about it, of course. But just because it can be broadcast, you don’t have to. This is a very big intervention when you take more than one movie like this.

“Beware of the Jönsson League” has Henrik Dorsin as “Sickan”, Anders Johansson as Vanheden, David Sundin as Harry and Hedda Stiernstedt as Doris.

The film was supposed to open in theaters on Christmas Day, but is now being held up by new restrictions in relation to the corona pandemic.

DN has contacted SF Studios for comment.
