Medical care in Stockholm is on its knees after the spread of the infection has increased, and the situation is now more tense than in the spring.

– In the spring, the need for medical attention increased rapidly and then decreased rapidly. Now the peak continues week after week, says director of health and medical care Björn Eriksson.

Björn Eriksson doesn’t want to talk about any ceiling for care capacity, “we increase capacity as much as necessary.” The limitation lies, instead, in how long the great need for care lasts.

– The peak is much longer than last spring, it has been going on since November. Although we don’t have that many covid patients now, the burden of care is at least as great because we have so many more patients who do not have covid-19, says Björn Eriksson.

Few travel by public transport

According to the Stockholm Region, there is no indication that the need for care will decrease in the future.

– There is nothing more important than reducing the spread of the infection, but now we see no signs of that, says Eriksson.

Despite the fact that the spread of the infection remains high, his opinion is that the vast majority of the region follows the recommendations.

– We can, for example, look at the barrier crossings in public transport that are at a low level, 41 percent of normal. Farmers largely follow the recommendations, but since the spread of the infection has not changed, it is not enough.

Very long work shifts

On Tuesday, 800 COVID-19 patients were admitted to emergency hospitals in the Stockholm region, says Björn Eriksson.

– This means that the care staff will not be able to be with their loved ones during the weekends as they deserve it, but will continue to work extra and very long shifts. It has never been as exhausting in healthcare as it is now.

TT: Never ever?

– This tense health, for so long, at least has not happened since we professionals can remember.
