It is difficult to withdraw authorization from an interpreter, although mistakes can lead to a full rehearsal having to be repeated, reports SVT Nyheter. Four out of every five requests are canceled.
– Innocent people can be convicted and guilty people can go free, says Margareta McKenna from the Rättstolkarna association to SVT.
In one of the cases examined by the SVT, the Court of Appeal denounced an interpreter in connection with a trial for the murder of a child. In that case, the interpretation was so bad that the trial had to be resumed and the interpreter received a warning.
In Sweden, there are licensed and unauthorized interpreters, where licensed interpreters have been tested by the Swedish Chamber of Commerce. In order for an interpreter to dispose of your authorization, acknowledgment or documentation is generally required. The reason most reports are canceled is word for word.
– There are high demands to be authorized and also high demands to get rid of the authorization. There may be shortcomings, but not so serious that it becomes relevant with a warning or withdrawal, says Jonas Lembke, SVT’s Kammarkollegiet administrator, and says it is difficult to sanction an interpreter solely for his shortcomings.
The SVT has analyzed 49 cases in which authorized interpreters reported to the Chamber of Deputies between 2015 and 2020. Ten of the reports resulted in a warning, while authorization was withdrawn in four cases. In none of these cases have words been opposed to words.
There is a shortage of licensed interpreters in Sweden and in many cases unauthorized interpreters are used instead.
