Details on possible family quarantine under discussion

The Stockholm region sees signs that the spread of infection is increasing in the region. Last week, 526 cases of covid-19 were found in the region, of the 27,535 analyzed. To compare with 334 of 25,474 analyzed the previous week, according to the Public Health Agency figures.

Public Health Agency state epidemiologist Anders Tegnell is not particularly concerned about the new figures and believes that the risk of infection has not increased much for anyone.

– You shouldn’t worry like that. We have tested a lot of people so the increase is not that great in terms of volume. But at the same time, we find ourselves in a situation where it is very important to listen to all these signals and act accordingly, says Anders Tegnell.

Stockholm region Health and Medical Director Björn Eriksson, on the other hand, sees the increase as very worrying.

– We have seen how quickly this disease has surprised us before. If we see a corresponding increase next week, it could be the start of a second wave that means more people are infected, more people get so sick that they need hospital care, and more people will die.

Discussions are currently taking place between the Swedish Public Health Agency and the Stockholm Region on how the regions should act with regard to increasing the spread of the infection. Björn Eriksson has raised the issue of family quarantine.

– At home, it is more difficult to keep your distance from other people and therefore it is also where the infection is most likely to spread. Therefore, they are now looking into the possibility that when an infected person is found, others in the household will stay home until the infection is over, he told DN on Wednesday.

Anders Tegnell says it will not be a formal quarantine.

Exactly which complementary measures may be relevant is currently under discussion.

– If residents see the seriousness of the situation and we see greater compliance with the recommendations of the Public Health Agency, we will be able to limit the spread of the infection and no further action will be needed, says Björn Eriksson.

So what do the rules of conduct mean in concrete terms?

– We are discussing exactly how this should go. We’ll see how we land on the details and the possibility, says Anders Tegnell, noting that he had wanted to wait to bring up the issue of family quarantine.

– Yes, we really did not intend to raise that issue until we had a completely clear concept. Now we must find out how we solve the purely practical possibilities of doing this and how.

Are you talking about advice or restrictions in your discussions?

– Right now everything is open, we have never closed doors. In every situation, it is important to find the best possible solution. Whether there are recommendations or laws in place, each situation must decide, says Anders Tegnell.

It also points out that it is very important to follow the current rules and recommendations.

– We must all get together, go back and follow him properly. Then we can have a pretty tough fall. If we don’t, there is a risk that we will end up in a situation where it will be much more difficult for us.

So what happens now and how long will the discussions continue?

– This is going to happen soon. So we must find a model for this in a few days, concludes state epidemiologist Anders Tegnell.
