The giant Defense Force exercise Aurora was postponed due to a crown pandemic. Instead, the Navy intervenes and conducts a national exercise with around 2,000 participants.
“We should be able to conduct operations even during somewhat more difficult periods,” says Michaela Linge, Head of Communications at the Naval Academy.
On May 11, the Navy begins a ten-day national exercise. Image of the 2016 similar Navy exercise, Swenex 16.
As of May 11, the Navy is launching a ten-day national exercise off the coast of Sweden. Some 2,000 participants from all units of the Navy will participate in the exercise, which is called Swenex 20.
– We have a constant need to develop and practice our skills. It is our mission to be prepared, ”says Michaela Linge, Head of Communication for the Naval Academy.
Actually, the giant Aurora exercise, with 25,000 participants, would have taken place during the same time period, but was postponed in the future due to the crown pandemic. To ensure that Swenex 20 is carried out in a contagious manner, the Swedish Armed Forces have taken a number of security measures.
– Some of the participants are on board the ships, so they are isolated from the others. And amphibious soldiers on the coast find it easier to keep their distance from each other because they are outdoors.
In addition, ships do not receive visitors or change crew members.
TT: Wouldn’t it have been better to take it safely before the uncertainty and postpone the exercise?
– We have a mission to maintain security and work to preserve our democratic freedom. This means that we should be able to carry out operations even during somewhat more difficult periods, says Michaela Linge and continues:
– We have done the safety analysis and taken steps to practice even now.
