DENMARK: The Queen’s greeting puzzled the Danes

Last week, Queen Margaret, 80, was out in the wild and enjoying the mild spring weather.

The day was immortalized with a couple of photos that were posted on Instagram along with a personal greeting from the Danish regent.

“During the past year, nature has been a free zone for many of us and we have experienced Denmark in a new way. In the near future we will have to continue living with restrictions, but in more ways than one we are moving towards better times.

“Here from Trend, I send warmest spring greetings to all of you.

Margrethe R “

Around here, many Danes reacted, writes BT. Where did that R come from after Margrethe? And what does it represent?

The answer did not turn out to be as mysterious as many thought.

– Regina, the R stands for Regina, says royal house expert Michael Bregnsbo to BT.

Regina comes from Latin and means “The reigning queen”.

The queen has stayed away during the pandemic. If they saw her outside, she wore a mouth guard. But not in the forest.

Always use “R”

In fact, all Danish rulers have historically added an R after their signature. If you are the reigning king, the R stands for “Rex”, which is Latin for “king.”

– I think he always uses an R after his name, now he signs something. The queen would never write “Margrethe the other” as an example, says Michael Bregnsbro.

In fact, there is an R even in the Queen Margrethe monogram. But obviously this was a first for many Danes and they may keep a little more track after the queen’s signing in the future.

According to Michael Bregnsbro, there are no abbreviations that Crown Prince Frederik or Crown Princess Mary can add to their names, they have to wait until they take over the throne.

The Instagram post has also received attention because it seriously shows that Queen Margrethe has taken to social media.

– The queen could easily have said “the youngest can do that”. But I think she’s curious and at the same time she wants to be there for the Danes where the Danes are, says Nathalie Larsen, a social media specialist at the Lead Agency communications agency.

– Not afraid to try new things. She is an artist and Instagram suits her.
