Christian Eriksen took a step forward for Denmark.
Double joy for Denmark.
Belated victory goal against Iceland and seeded in the next World Cup qualifying matches.
– We have taken an important step, says the captain of the national team Kasper Hjulmand.
Denmark pulled off a lead draw in the final minutes from Icelandic forward Vidar Örn Kjartansson.
But after a penalty in the absolute finals of the match, Christian Eriksen secured a Danish victory 2-1.
It was also Eriksen who started the Danish scorer. After the goal, which came after twelve minutes of play, the Danish celebrated by placing the ball inside the shirt.
After the game, he said why.
– My wonderful girlfriend is pregnant, said Eriksen, who was relieved after the late decision:
– It was important to win. As we were in the lead for much of the match, it would have felt like a loss if it had ended in a draw.
Earlier this weekend, it was also clear that Denmark will secure a place in the first group of seeds before the World Cup qualifiers for the championship to be played in 2022.
“Important for the country”
With Saturday’s draw between Switzerland and Spain (1-1), the chance for the Swiss to overtake Denmark in the top ten ranked countries in Europe disappeared.
And the top ten European nations will thus be the top seeds in the next draw, which was good news for Denmark and the captain of the national team Kasper Hjulmand.
– We dream of winning and uniting Denmark. Now we have taken an important step before the World Cup qualifiers. It is important for the national team, for Danish football and for all of Denmark, says the captain of the national team in a press release.
Possibility of being a group leader
After Sunday night’s 2-1 win, Denmark is still two points behind group leaders Belgium.
On Wednesday, the teams meet in the final round. A Danish win would mean a group win and a place in the Nations League play-offs.
Denmark, however, are forced to do without goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel, who had to leave the pitch with a dreaded concussion after a collision with an Icelandic player.
