The United States House of Representatives has decided to decriminalize cannabis at the federal level. However, the law is not expected to pass in the second chamber of Congress, the Senate.

This is the first time a congressional decision has been made to decriminalize the drug since it was classified as a drug in 1970.

– This is a historic moment, says Democrat Tulsi Gabbard, who pushed the issue.

Fifteen US states have legalized cannabis for intoxication and more than 30 states allow medical use.

However, state laws have so far rubbed off on federal legislation, which has meant, among other things, that companies that focus on cannabis, for example, have struggled with banking and financing.

– This legislation does not legalize cannabis throughout the country. Stop the federal government from interfering with what states have decided to do, says Democrat Earl Blumenauer.

If the law goes into effect, federal cannabis-related prosecutions will be dropped and a five percent tax will be introduced on cannabis products.

The decision was made by votes 228-164 in the House of Representatives, where Democrats are in the majority.

In neighboring Canada, cannabis was decriminalized in 2018.
