The Södra Älvsborgs Hospital (Säs) in Borås is criticized by the Swedish Health and Care Inspectorate (Ivo) after a failure in care that caused the death of a patient, reports Borås newspaper.
The patient arrived at the emergency room in late 2017 with vomiting, headaches and motor problems. Previously, the patient had a shunt, a tube that drains excess fluid, implanted in the brain.
Säs’s doctor judged after the X-ray that the condition had not changed and that it was a migraine. The patient was sent home with painkillers.
The next day, the patient sought care at the Alingsås hospital emergency department after three epileptic seizures and worsening symptoms.
A new X-ray revealed that the shunt had impaired function. He was replaced during an operation at the Sahlgrenska Hospital in Gothenburg, but the patient died after a week.
