The contract, which is based on Muslim Islamic law and is issued by an imam, states that the woman must pay the equivalent of just over 100,000 Swedish crowns in order to get divorced.
He also promises to teach his children about the Quran, teach them Arabic, and pray five times a day. According to the contract, the woman also loses custody of the children if she finds a new husband.
There are no hard figures on how common the deal is, but according to the Danish government, there are probably more similar cases that have not come to light.
Requires new legislation
The disclosure in the Berlingske daily has prompted several political parties to demand stricter legislation. The Popular Socialist Party (SF) demands that “social control” be prohibited in the same section as that against psychological violence, which can lead to three years in prison.
– If we had done it before, I’m pretty sure the imam had thought about it before accepting something like this, says Halime Oguz (SF).
The bourgeois Liberal Party also wants to clamp down on the imams in particular.
– If they don’t want to live by Danish rules and regulations, they can get a single ticket out of the country as quickly as possible, says Mads Fuglede (V).
Should stop the “madness”
The Danish People’s Party, which is critical of immigration, demands a response from the government and has summoned the Minister for Integration for talks.
– You will be forced to give an explanation, but also an action. Because this is not something we can just see through our fingers, says Pia Kjærsgaard (DF).
Social Democrat Kaare Dybvad Bek, Acting Minister for Foreign Affairs and Integration, says the government must do what it can to stop the “madness” and toughen the legislation.
– We must see where the screws can be tightened, so that these women have the same security as everyone who lives in Denmark, says Kaare Dybvad Bek (S).
