The Swedish government announced on Monday that the border with Denmark would be closed from Tuesday. The purpose of the ban is to slow the spread of Covid-19, which has increased considerably in both Denmark and Skåne during the fall.
– We close the border so that the Danes do not cross and tourists have fun, says Chancellor Ann Linde on TV4 Nyhetsmorgon.
On Wednesday morning, some 30 Danes were detained at the border. Ferry traffic from Bornholm to Ystad has also stopped.
– The traffic that goes from there are ferries directly to Köge or flights. Bornholm is special, it’s about health transports and social functions, says Ewa-Gun Westford of the police in the southern region of TT.
Mayor: “Incredibly chaotic”
In Denmark, voices are now being raised that Sweden should rethink Bornholm, which was open even when the border was closed this spring.
Danish Transport Minister Benny Engelbrecht (S) has contacted his Swedish minister colleague with the call to “rethink”, he tells TV2. He believes that the closure of the border will have consequences for many Christmas celebrations.
– We have to make the Swedish government aware that this is a special situation, he says.
Bornholm Mayor Winni Grosbøll is also concerned about the missed Christmas celebrations and says the situation is “incredibly chaotic”.
– We are quite moved on Bornholm. Christmas is two days away and this affects many people’s ability to come and go, Winni Grosbøll tells DR.
