Daniel Prude, 41, was strangled to death when police put a fake hat on him and pushed him to the ground in New York.
The case was unknown until Wednesday, when the family released a video of the intervention.
– They treated my father like an animal, says his daughter Tashyra Prude, 18 years old.
The father of five, Daniel Prude, 41, died after a police intervention in Rochester, New York, on March 30.
All seven police officers involved have already been removed from duty, but still have their salary, which his daughter, Tashyra Prude, 18, thinks feels like a slap in the face.
– He shouldn’t have been killed on the street. He didn’t deserve it. They treated him like an animal, she says.
She thinks he feels disrespectful to her, her family, and everyone who cared for her father.
“It’s like a paid vacation, if you ask me,” he told The Guardian.
Mentally unstable
Late on the night of March 23, Joe Prude called the police because his brother, Daniel, was mentally unstable. Joe needed help and when the police arrived Daniel Prude was naked on the street.
But he didn’t get the help he needed.
Police force cameras show Daniel Prude sitting on the ground when police arrested him. He got angry and cursed the police, who laughed. Daniel spat on the ground several times. Later, the police put a fake hat on Daniel Prude. Then they pinned his head to the ground. Daniel Prude stopped moving.
A week later, he died in the hospital. One doctor concluded that it was “complications of asphyxia in connection with the physical intervention” that killed him.
“I called my brother to get help, not to get lynched,” Joe Prude told Reuters.

The Mayor: It’s About Racism
The brutal arrest came at the same time as New York State was losing control of the spread of the coronavirus. News of the devastating pandemic devoured the news flow.
The New York state prosecutor is now investigating the case and the city mayor, who says he did not learn of the case until August, is calling it a racist act.
– Institutional and structural racism caused the death of Daniel Prude. I will not deny it, I am facing that fact and I demand justice, says Mayor Lovley Warren.
Cry the future moments
Tashyra Prude appreciates the video, although it is painful to watch.
– My dad is outside without clothes. You can’t say he has a gun, because where would he have it?
Daniel Prude was an energetic, loving and kind man, says Tashyra. She used to come to him for advice or when she needed to laugh. She prays that she can move on, but regrets all the future moments that she cannot share with her father.
– I want everyone to know that he was not a threat to society or the police. He was not a bad person.
