A 160 cubic meter container in a building in Forskningsvägen in Säffle leaked the sulfur dioxide gas at lunchtime. The direction of the wind caused the gas to move towards a residential area according to the rescue service.

Traffic on the site was shut down. Shortly after 1 pm, the police announce that the gas came from a broken pipe and that the leak is now closed. There is no danger to the public.

Sulfur dioxide is excreted from volcanoes, among other things, which in high concentrations can be very dangerous to inhale. According to the police, the gas used in the manufacture of pulp can be “corrosive to the skin and eyes and in very high concentrations lethal”.

Sulfur emissions from volcanoes, among other things, caused respiratory problems for Iceland’s population in 2014, when unusually high levels of sulfur dioxide in the air were also measured at various locations in Norrbotten and Västerbotten.
