Therefore, the government is now introducing a temporary ban on travel from Denmark to Sweden starting at midnight. Swedish citizens, other people who live or work in Sweden, as well as people who transport goods are excluded.
The basis for the decision is also the mutated variant of the coronavirus that has spread in the UK and to some extent in Denmark as well.
Scanian politicians appealed
During the day, several Scania politicians came out and called for the border closure for Danes who want to go to Scania for shopping and sightseeing. The president of the Malmö municipal council, Katrin Stjernfeldt Jammeh (S), welcomes the government’s announcement of a temporarily closed border with Denmark.
“We appreciate the sensitivity of the government and that it acts quickly. Of course, the whole situation is regrettable and I hope it is brief. Usually we are the first to keep open, but now the situation is urgent and life and health come first. “, says Katrin Stjernfeldt Jammeh (S), president of the Malmö city council in a written comment to Aftonbladet.
Earlier in the day, Stjernfeldt Jammeh had written on his Facebook page that he contacted Damberg about a temporary entry ban. “Denmark has previously shut down much of society and now it becomes even more important to ensure that Christmas shopping and midday shopping are not made on the Swedish side. I also call on the Danish government to do everything possible to prevent the infection from spreading across national borders, ”he wrote then.
Regional Board Chairman Carl-Johan Sonesson (M) previously told SVT Nyheter Skåne that he wants the government to introduce a temporary entry ban for Denmark’s entertainment and shopping travelers due to the mutation of the virus that is it has spread in the UK, but also somewhat in Denmark. However, he stressed that it is important to exclude those who need to commute through the strait.
