The fiancee of slain journalist Jamal Khashoggi has sued the crown prince of Saudi Arabia in a US court, where she is claiming damages for his death in Istanbul two years ago. Hatice Cengiz accuses the crown prince of ordering the assassination to definitively silence the voice of critics of the regime in the United States.

Cengiz, who is a Turkish citizen, chose to file the lawsuit in a US federal court, as she does not believe in a trial in Saudi Arabia.

A criminal investigation into Khashoggi’s death is underway in Turkey.

Behind the atmosphere in the United States, which in addition to the Crown Prince includes 28 Saudi officials, is also the human rights organization Democracy now representing the Arab world (Dawn), founded by Washington Post columnist Khashoggi.

Cengiz refers to the fact that the murder of her fiance caused both personal and financial damage, while Dawn refers to the fact that the business was damaged as a result of the murder.

Jamal Khashoggi lived in exile in the United States. She visited the Saudi Arabian consulate in Istanbul on October 2, 2018 to obtain the formal documents necessary for her marriage to Cengiz.

Saudi Arabia has previously sentenced 13 people to severe prison terms for the murder of Khashoggi inside the consulate.

The US intelligence service, the CIA, stated in a 2018 report that Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman had given orders to assassinate Khashoggi.
