Sharp criticism of the Crown Commission

The strategy to protect the elderly has failed and the measures came too late.

Structural deficiencies have been known for decades, writes the Crown Commission in its harsh criticism:

“For these deficiencies, the government in office, like previous governments that also had this knowledge, bears the final responsibility.”

The fact that Sweden has failed to protect the country’s elderly during the pandemic has already been established by Ivo, the Swedish Health and Care Inspectorate.

Today, a partial report on elder care came from the Crown Commission, which draws the same conclusion.

“In its review of the authorities’ handling of the spread of infection in the care and care of the elderly, the Crown Commission has found that the strategy to protect the elderly has failed,” they write in a press release.

“Unprepared and poorly equipped”

The most important factor behind the wide spread of infection among nursing homes is the general spread of infection in society.

Then there are the “long-known structural deficiencies” that have been known for decades, the crown commission writes in the 300-page report.

“For these deficiencies, the government in office, like the previous governments that also had this knowledge, has the final responsibility. The government governs the country (Chapter 1, Section 6 of the form of government) and therefore had eliminated the initiatives necessary for the care of the elderly to be better equipped for such a crisis, ”writes the Crown Commission on who is responsible.

The report also writes that employees in elder care were largely left alone to handle the crisis situation. There were also no established channels between, for example, the National Board of Health and Welfare and the municipal health service.

“When the infection broke out in earnest, there was no national overview of the municipalities’ preparedness to face a pandemic. Neither have the pertinent state authorities sought this knowledge sufficiently in advance, or to a sufficient extent, or it has not reached the end ”.

Compare with the rest of the Nordic region

In the spring of 2020, the government and government agencies implemented a series of measures to reduce the risks of spreading the infection in the care of the elderly. But these came too late and were not enough, writes the crown commission:

“According to our overall assessment, these were late, despite preliminary information that older people were particularly vulnerable. We assess that the measures were also insufficient in several aspects ”.

The Crown Commission also compares itself to neighboring Nordic countries.

“In the other Nordic countries, on the other hand, the care of the elderly seems to have been more focused on the first pandemic measures by the authorities, even though medical care and especially intensive care were also at the forefront there.”

Aftonbladet has contacted the chairman of the crown commission, Mats Melin, who forwards questions to the press conference scheduled at 3 p.m.
