The idea is that inefficient private shopping trips are replaced by more efficient freight transport. In the long term, e-commerce could make households in big cities refrain from buying a car.
– But there are many things that speak against e-commerce being energy efficient, says Pia Sundbergh.
One is the business idea of express deliveries, which makes it difficult to obtain well-packaged shipments that heavily fill vehicles.
Another is that the merchandise is packed in large packages and that the trucks circulate with a lot of air.
A third is that e-commerce uses air transport more frequently than other businesses.
– If you, as a customer, buy contact lenses on an e-commerce platform with suppliers in China, they will be shipped in one package to Sweden. Especially if you choose express delivery. If, instead, you buy them from an optician in Sweden, in a store or through e-commerce, the glasses also come from China, but they have been well packaged first by sea and then by truck, compares Pia Sundbergh.
Another factor – Which, like express deliveries, has been the industry’s way of making itself attractive to customers, is merchandise returns. Order ten pairs of shoes, return them if you are not satisfied. But in the long run, the scheme is costly for businesses and increases transportation.
Now, above all, the fashion industry is working to reduce the rate of return of goods.
– This is done through more detailed information on products and sizes. And so, a virtual test room development is developing. There are more or less advanced variants. It’s easier with glasses, where you upload a photo of yourself and see how the different glasses fit together. For clothes, you can imagine a digital version of yourself where the customer can see how the clothes fit the body, says Pia Sundbergh.
As a consumer, he emphasizes, from a climate perspective, you can think about planning your purchases and placing multiple orders at the same time. Also, choose a longer delivery time and not such a narrow time window for product delivery and to avoid returns.
– And if you have to pick up your item by car, do it in relation to another case, he says.
