Starting Monday next week, Sweden’s upper secondary schools can choose to return to distance education. This after a government decision.
– We see that the spread of infection is increasing throughout society. That is why we must do even more, among other things, increasing distance education to reduce the spread of infection in upper secondary school, says Minister of Education Anna Ekström (S) in Aktuellt of SVT.
Ekström wants to see a mixed form of teaching, that is, a mix of classroom and distance learning.
– There are great disadvantages to closing entire schools. We see in other countries that have strict measures, like Belgium, that are still trying to find these mixed forms, says Anna Ekström (S).
“It would be strange otherwise”
Virologist Fredrik Elgh from Umeå University would have liked the government to move forward in its decision on upper secondary education.
– It is gratifying that this change is being made, but we must do something even more radical. The spread of the infection is probably as great among these near-adult people as it is in the rest of society. Otherwise, it would be strange, Elgh says.
The Minister of Education responds that this is a strong measure.
– Now it is important to take this very seriously. It is also quite simple. These are things we know; wash your hands, keep your distance, and stay home if you are sick.
