Crisis meeting after chaos surrounding school choice: “Must be corrected quickly” | Göteborgs-Posten

On Thursday, the GP was able to say that hundreds of custodians, after reports of unwanted school placements far from home, appealed the decisions of the Gothenburg primary school administration.

“This is going completely insane, it is a complete failure,” said father Fredrik Färm, whose nine-year-old son was placed in a school where he has a long journey, completely without ex-classmates.

On Friday, examples of desperate parents continued to arrive. As early as Thursday, Helene Odenjung (L), a municipal council responsible for school problems in Gothenburg Municipality, invited an additional convening crisis meeting due to the emergency situation.

At the meeting were the party group leaders on the school board and representatives of the Gothenburg primary school administration.

More than 1500 families could not choose

– Since we have received so many questions from parents, it was important that all parties to the committee receive a review of how it looks, says Helene Odenjung.

During the meeting, it was learned that up to 13 percent of a total of 12,000 children have not fulfilled any of their wishes. This means that more than 1,500 families have been offered a school placement that they have not included among their top five options.

– It has become a very unfortunate mistake in the new system. I quickly realized that something was not right after the reactions of overwhelmed parents who testified about absurd placements, says Viktoria Tryggvadottir Rolka, political spokesperson for the school for Social Democrats.

Jessica Blixt, the school’s political spokesperson for Democrats, is primarily upset at how the subsidiarity principle has been handled in the new digital adoption system.

– It is horrible. Now they have promised to rectify it, but the investments that have already been made are favorable and cannot be changed, although one can appeal, she says.

“Appeal and request change of school”

Helene Odenjung fully understands that chaos has led to disappointment and frustration.

– Here it is important that you appeal and request a change of school. Only then can management make corrections, she says.

Furthermore, he believes that the bird route method underlying distance measurement has led to unreasonable travel times for many children.

– It should be absolutely possible to enter the actual school path into the system instead of the absolute path, says Odenjung.

After the two-hour crisis meeting, various decisions were made.

An internal commission is appointed to investigate why this year’s elementary school choice was made as it was, but also to ensure that it is not repeated. In addition, consideration will be given to whether the canopies can solve acute problems.

– If pavilions are required in some places, you should look at it. It is not reasonable to live in one part of the city and go to school in another, says Jessica Blixt (D).

“Gothenburg Will Fly”

Helene Odenjung also says that the number of school places will increase in some places.

– The administration works 24 hours. They are tasked with solving the situation. The fact that we have a shortage of schools in some areas is a fact that becomes even clearer now that we have taken control of the SDN school, she says.

Viktoria Tryggvadottir Rolka (S) ‘s entry to the meeting could not be misunderstood either.

– There are families that currently suffer great tension. This needs to be fixed quickly. I’ll push it, she says.

Both Viktoria Tryggvadottir Rolka and Jessica Blixt open up to finally break the active school option.

– We cannot afford to lose more citizens to the cranes municipalities. You will escape Gothenburg due to cuts in preschool and school, and now this, says Jessica Blixt.
