The 39-year-old man was initially treated in the intensive care unit at Östra Hospital, but despite shortness of breath, poor oxygenation and fever, he was transferred after a few days to the field hospital that was quickly installed outside. from the Östra Hospital in Gothenburg.
The transfer was carried out despite the fact that experienced doctors alerted about important deficiencies in the tent.
Decisive decision
After a week in the field hospital, the man quickly deteriorated and a decision was made to transfer him back to the hospital’s intensive care unit.
But when the 39-year-old man was disconnected from the store’s stationary respirator, he could not be connected to the transport respirator.
Staff realized that new breathing tubes were missing. They did not know then that a decision had previously been made to save on these particular hoses, because they were on the rollback list, and that the transport ventilator therefore did not have its own, according to the hospital’s internal investigation.
The staff got stressed out and wasn’t sure what to do. Not everyone on the care team was aware of the routines, research shows.
Further attempts were made to connect the patient to the transport ventilator, using the store’s existing respirator hoses.
Interruptions may have affected
The 39-year-old man’s condition rapidly deteriorated and no air entered his lungs. He was seriously ill with lung disease due to Covid-19, stopped breathing, and died shortly after.
“Various interruptions in ventilation may have affected the outcome,” the research states.
The hospital has presented several proposals for action, including that the transport respirator should be complete with hoses and prioritize the review of routines and new work methods with all staff.
– It was our fault. We were the ones who simply committed a wrong event. So we are very sorry for this, says Björn Andersson, chief physician at Sahlgrenska University Hospital.
