A 39-year-old man with covid died after staff at the temporary field hospital in Gothenburg failed to connect him to a respirator that lacked hoses. The staff were not aware of the routines, research SVT has read shows.
– It was our fault. We are very sorry for this, Björn Andersson, chief physician at Sahlgrenska University Hospital, tells SVT.
The man was treated for the first time at the Östra Hospital, but was transferred to the temporary field hospital that was in use from March to August this year. When he got worse after a week, a decision was made to transfer him back to the hospital’s intensive care unit.
It was when the 39-year-old was disconnected from the store’s stationary respirator that things went wrong. Personnel discovered hoses missing from the transport respirator. An attempt was made to use the existing hoses from the store respirator, but the patient’s condition rapidly deteriorated. He was seriously ill with lung disease due to Covid-19 and died shortly after.
According to Björn Andersson, there was a lack of communication about the new routines and working methods within the group. The staff did not know that the hoses had been put away because they were on the waiting list. The hospital will now carry out various measures after the incident, among other things, the transport respirator must be complete with hoses and routines must be reviewed.
On Monday, the hospital also reported the incident according to Lex Maria.
