Covid-19 vaccine testing stopped after one case of illness

In a comment to DN, Astra Zeneca writes that testing will now be paused for a period, in order to investigate what may have triggered the alleged serious side effect.

The company writes that they voluntarily pause testing and that the procedure is a routine measure that “is taken when there is potentially unexplained disease within a clinical study, to ensure that we maintain the integrity of the study.”

The test data will now be reviewed by an independent committee, according to the statement.

According to an anonymous New York Times source, the test person is said to have suffered from transverse myelitis, a nerve disease that can occur, among other things, after vaccination. Astra Zeneca does not want to comment on the information about a possible ND nerve disease.

Swedish Vaccine CoordinatorRichard Bergström has read the media information.

– It is a serious side effect and, according to media reports, it is neuritis. But I have not heard it confirmed by the company or anyone else, he tells DN.

It describes paused testing and the forthcoming independent evaluation as standard procedures in vaccine studies and also looks forward to dialogue with the UK Medicines Agency.

Richard Bergström thinks that it is too early to comment on the future of the vaccine.

– These studies are so large just to be able to capture these kinds of unusual side effects. But it is too early to say what that means for this vaccine.

– That is precisely why we do not invest in a single vaccine. We hope, of course, that this works. But if not, we have other vaccines that we have access to, he says.

What reactions does the person was affected by and when this should have happened is unconfirmed, but a person with knowledge of the experiments tells Stat News, which was the first to report the incident, that the person will recover.

“In large studies, diseases can occur randomly, and to verify this carefully, such events are examined independently,” Astra Zenecas writes in their statement.

Similar setbacks are common when developing a new vaccine, states Stat News. The question now is how long will Astra Zeneca wait before resuming testing.

The new vaccine developed by Astra Zeneca in collaboration with the University of Oxford. It is being tested in the United Kingdom and in the United States, and the affected person participated in one of the British trials, according to Stat News. Now all trials of the company’s vaccine are on hold.

In August, the European Commission announced that it had reached an agreement with Astra Zeneca to purchase the possible vaccine as soon as it is safe and effective. The agreement covers all EU countries, including Sweden, and covers 300 million doses.

The Commission also announced that a similar vaccine agreement is being negotiated with Johnson & Johnson.

Currently, nine vaccine candidates are in Phase 3 testing.
