Both the region’s infection control physician, Thomas Wahlberg, and the director of health and medical care, Ann Söderström, emphasized the gravity of the current situation when they called a press conference on Thursday.
– It is now important in every way to stop the spread of the infection. This presupposes that everyone does what they can to follow the advice. It requires great sacrifices, but the pandemic cannot go away, says Thomas Wahlberg.
– We see a strong increase in most hospitals throughout the region. That is worrisome. It is more pronounced in Sahlgrenska, but also in Borås and Skövde it is a heavy burden, says Ann Söderström, noting that it is somewhat calmer in NU healthcare and in Alingsås and Kungälv.
More than 20 per day
– Every day, more than 20 patients are admitted to hospitals in the region. Because care times are long, sometimes several weeks, it increases dramatically because we don’t print at the same rate we admit patients, Ann Söderström continues.
Last week, 2,982 cases of covid-19 were reported in Västra Götaland. This is an increase of 1,609 compared to the previous week.
Infection increases at all ages, but most infected people are in the 20-59 age group.
What is the invitation for families starting to plan their Christmas celebration?
– There are many weeks left, but they should already begin to adapt to the fact that it is a Christmas where we need to be many fewer who celebrate together. You can’t have family parties and large gatherings, says Thomas Wahlberg.
