A judge at Brazil’s highest court temporarily halted President Jair Bolsonaro’s plans to expel 30 people at the Venezuelan embassy.

Bolsonaro had left Venezuela until Saturday to pick up the 30, who are diplomats and employees of the embassy.

Brazil recovered all of its diplomats from Venezuela on April 17, and the Brazilian government, according to government officials, estimated that Venezuela would do the same, based on an oral agreement on mutual action.

But Venezuela declared Thursday that there was no such agreement and that its diplomats would stay where they were. Venezuelan Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza accused Brazil on Twitter of violating international law by trying to expel diplomats.

Judge Luís Roberto Barroso stops the deportation for humanitarian reasons, since the crown pandemic could endanger the health of diplomats. His decision comes after an appeal from a member of parliament of the Brazilian workers’ party.

“That member of parliament is a faithful defender of the Chávez / Maduro regime,” Bolsonaro tweeted after the decision, referring to Venezuelan socialist leader Nicolás Maduro and former leader Hugo Chávez.

Like the United States and several EU countries, Brazil supports opposition leader Juan Guaidó and believes he is the legitimate president of Venezuela.

Brazil also believes that María Teresa Belandria, whom Guaidó has designated, is the Venezuelan ambassador to the country. She has her office in a hotel, where the embassy is controlled by diplomats loyal to Maduro.
