Only after many years of struggle, a Malmö student with a disability received a student assistant. Now, the city of Malmö must pay the student SEK 20,000 in compensation for discrimination.

The Court of Appeal has concluded this with reference to the Discrimination Act. The city of Malmö appealed to the Supreme Court, but received no authorization to appeal, thus confirming the verdict, reports Dagens Nyheter.

– I felt difficult and demanding, but I just wanted my daughter to finish school, the mother tells the newspaper.

From the daughter’s entry into fourth grade through eighth grade, the mother found additional support so that the daughter could achieve her goals in school. Some measures were taken, but not enough, according to the mother. Just over two years ago, he enlisted the help of a Malmö anti-discrimination lawyer and sued the municipality for lack of accessibility. Both the district court and the court of appeal found that the daughter had been discriminated against.

– I have not yet analyzed the verdict, but it is clear that there are many other cases that can certainly lead to compensation after this, says Elizabeth Malmstedt, unit manager of the Swedish School Inspectorate, to DN.
