Also in northwest Greece, the corona virus has been found among animals from two mink farms, according to the country’s Ministry of Agriculture. But the type of virus found in mink is not said to have mutated.
The owner of one of the facilities, in the Kozani region, west of the city of Thessaloniki, has tested positive for the virus. All employees are now being evaluated.
Approximately 2,500 minks at the facility will be killed.
Hundreds of thousands of minks are in Greece and fur exports bring between 60 and 70 million euros (615-718 million crowns) to the country each year.
In Denmark, the coronavirus in mink farms has mutated and spread to humans, raising concerns that future vaccines against the virus may be less effective. Before the pandemic, the mink industry in Denmark consisted of some 15 to 17 million animals. Several million have already been killed and thrown into mass graves.
