Corona’s situation worse than worst-case scenario in the Skåne Region

In late November, Kvällsposten reported that the Skåne Region was working on the basis of different scenarios on how the spread of the infection would unfold. In a worst-case scenario, the corona wave would peak around Christmas holidays. In the worst case with 280 patients admitted to healthcare centers and 30 in IVA.

– It’s serious, it’s a very serious situation we’re in, said Mats E Persson, head of crisis management staff for the Skåne Region.

The reality was much worse than the region had anticipated. During December, the number of hospital admissions soared and exceeded the worst case with the length of the horses. On Wednesday, 578 covid patients were treated at the hospital, of which 56 in IVA.

– What we have seen is that the rate of increase has been very high during the month of December. We have many more patients both in the covid care department but especially in the intensive care unit, says Pia Lundbom during Wednesday’s press conference.

Skåne’s crown inserts were praised

This spring it sounded different. On May 20, Malmö’s early action against the crown was praised during the Public Health Agency press conference.

According to a forecast in early June, a continued low spread of the infection was predicted in Skåne.

– Meteorologists in the region believe that if we take care of ourselves and maintain the restrictions, we can probably stay at this level for a long time, said Per-Erik Ebbeståhl, director of safety and security in the city of Malmö at the time.

The prognosis was not correct. At the same time that the second wave hit Sweden, Skåne suffered a severe blow. From the fall onwards, the number of infected and hospitalized has steadily increased.

The special restrictions that were introduced on October 27 have yet to flatten the curve, and Eva Melander now says the peak may not yet have been reached.

– It has increased a little for each day with a real step before the Christmas weekend. Healthcare depends on what happens in society weeks before and we do not see a clear slowdown. There is a risk that we may not have seen the top or that it may not improve in a while. We are concerned that it may get worse or just get worse for several more weeks.
