Sardinia has always been associated with luxury hotels, white sand beaches, and well-off tourists who party in glamorous clubs and stay in luxury hotels. The island was one of the regions least affected by the pandemic this spring.
But now something has happened.
During the summer months, the number of crown falls has skyrocketed and there have been reports of partying tourists not wearing mouth guards. Local newspapers have begun to describe it as a “curse” on the Emerald Coast.
Spread the infection even further
The infected tourists then spread the virus further in the country.
Just over a week ago, Italy had 1,210 new infections in one day, compared to a figure of about 200 a few weeks earlier.
And in late August, Rome alone reported 200 crown falls in one day, a figure the capital had not had since late March. Most of the cases are related to people returning from Christmas celebrations in Sardinia.
Earlier this week, news also came that former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, his partner and two children, tested positive for corona, after staying on the Costa Smeralda.
And more than 60 corona cases have previously been linked to former Formula 1 team manager Flavio Briatores, the Billionaire nightclub, which has had several thousand guests during the summer months.
The club even had to close in late August after Briatore and several staff members tested positive for corona.
The disco had to close
Berlusconi also met Briatore just ten days before the popular nightclub closed. Then the nightclub manager visited the former prime minister’s luxurious Villa Certosa. A giant village that, among other things, has an artificial volcano that can spray fireworks, seven swimming pools and an amphitheater.
Berlusconi, infected with corona, is now being treated in hospital as a precautionary measure, writes AFP.
