Those who are pregnant should have a different work environment to avoid exposure to the coronavirus, according to the Swedish Work Environment Authority. Stock Photography.
Pregnant women should not work in a way that puts them at risk of being exposed to the coronavirus, announces the Swedish Work Environment Authority on its website.
The authority’s message comes at the request of a security representative in the Värmland region, who believes that pregnant women should not work near patients infected with covid-19. The Swedish Work Environment Authority agrees with:
“The Work Environment Law and our regulations apply to all workplaces. We always take a position in each individual case regarding requests from safety representatives. If we receive similar cases, we will make similar decisions. Pregnant women do not they must have tasks where they are exposed to the new corona virus. ” writes Ulrika Scholander, section director of the Swedish Work Environment Authority on the website.
However, they point out that work during pregnancy is not dangerous in itself, and that the state of knowledge about pregnancy and covid-19 is not entirely clear, but that the precautionary principle should be applied.
– There are studies that indicate that the infection can increase the risk of premature birth, cesarean section and growth retardation in the fetus, says Jenny Persson Blom, an expert on infection risks at the Swedish Work Environment Authority.
Those who are pregnant should have a modified work environment to avoid exposure, and if this is not possible, other tasks should be offered, writes the authority.
The Värmland region must submit an opinion to the Swedish workplace authority by 1 October at the latest.
– We have taken note of the notification from the Swedish Work Environment Authority. We are learning what this could mean for employees, the healthcare system and patients, says Wolmer Edqvist, interim manager of human resources.
– We do not believe that the notification rhymes with the previous decision that we have received from the Swedish Work Environment Authority regarding a safety stop affecting pregnant employees in functional and imaging diagnosis. We will raise the issue with the Swedish municipalities and regions (SKR), as a decision could have consequences for healthcare across the country.
