The virus mutation discovered in the UK is 70 percent more contagious than the variant that is more common in Sweden.
Despite this, today seven planes are landing from London in Sweden without any information from the authorities on how to deal with any quarantine, testing or self-isolation.
– In this situation, we follow the recommendations of the responsible authorities, says Ellen Laurin, Swedish press release.

The new virus mutation discovered in the UK is believed to be up to 70 percent more contagious than previous variants of the coronavirus. This has led a large number of countries, including France, Canada, India, Norway and Denmark, to quickly decide to stop the country’s air traffic.

In Sweden, the government is expected to make a decision on a travel ban from the UK on Monday, Interior Minister Mikael Damberg (S) announced yesterday.

But it is unclear exactly when the decision will be made and how extensive it will be. According to Damberg press secretary Sofie Rudh, there will be some news later in the day.

“Personal responsibility”

On Monday, seven UK planes land at three Swedish airports. Four planes in Arlanda, two in Landvetter and one in Västerås.

Swedavia is awaiting the recommendations of the authorities and does not take any special security measures due to the new mutation of the virus.

– In this situation, we follow the recommendations of the responsible authorities. It’s about personal responsibility. That you are healthy when you travel and have no symptoms and that you maintain a social distance, says Ellen Laurin, press release in Sweden.

Waiting for information from the authorities

Testing or taking the temperature of arriving travelers is not relevant.

– No, we do not, it is the Public Health Agency and the Stockholm Region who make decisions about possible tests and medical measures, he says.

However, according to Ellen Laurin, efforts are being made to reduce the risk of spreading the infection within the airport.

– We have staff who make sure it is sparse so there are no queues and we encourage people to wear mouth guards inside the terminal, he says.

Have you received any information that you will receive new information during the day?

– We have continuous contact with the responsible authorities, we follow developments and we await new information from the authorities and the government, says Ellen Laurin.

The new variant of the virus, which goes by the name VUI 202012/01, has not only been found in the UK but also in several European countries. Among them Denmark, Italy, Belgium and the Netherlands.

“It is not ruled out that it exists in Sweden”

The Public Health Agency has previously said that an entry ban from the UK is a reasonable measure in relation to the spread of the new virus mutation.

“The new variant already exists in several EU countries and it is not entirely impossible that it already exists in Sweden, but we have not yet been able to confirm it,” Johan Carlson wrote to Aftonbladet on Sunday.

On Monday, the authority’s press service greets that they have no new information on whether UK travelers should take special measures upon arrival in Sweden.
