Corona: more bicycles in major European cities during the pandemic

Riding the bicycle instead of taking public transportation has become increasingly common during the pandemic, according to a study by the Berlin Mercator Research Institute on Global Commons and Climate Change, MCC.

In the study, the researchers mapped how travel habits changed in 106 European cities during the pandemic. Berlin, Paris and Dublin are some of the cities included in the survey.

The results show that cycling increased on average between 11 and 48 percent in the cities participating in the survey during the months of March to July 2020. The German cities of Berlin, Cologne and Stuttgart stand out as some of the cities where cycling increased the most.

Although none Swedish cities are included in the survey, there are indications that cycling has also increased at home. Among other things, buying pressure on new bikes has received a record boost during the pandemic, to the point where the market is struggling to keep up.

– There is a great pent-up need and there are no stocks. In general, among providers, it takes longer to bring the bikes home. The need is greater than can be met, said Joakim Stenberg, CEO of Cykelbranschen in an interview with DN last week.

Swedish cities are not included in the survey, but there are other signs that cycling has increased here as well.

Also in the secondary market, interest has flourished during the pandemic, on the Tradera and Blocket sites, searches related to bicycles have increased, as has the number of ads.

The MCC study also shows that the number of so-called emerging bike lanes is taking up more and more space in cities, with an average of 11.5 kilometers of new bike lanes built between March and July 2020.
