Healthcare professionals now working with something else are encouraged to take leave to help hospitals in the Uppsala region cope with the corona pandemic.

At the University Hospital, the pressure is very strong after a corona outbreak among employees.

– Then there will be a shortage of staff due to the infection and those who continue to work will find it even more difficult, says Anna Gillman, an assistant physician for infection control.

On October 20, the Uppsala region became the first in the country to introduce local guidelines to curb the increasing spread of the infection. The general diffusion of society in the region has recently stopped increasing. But the number of people requiring hospital care for their Covid-19 is increasing. The region is now attracting more health workers.

– We know that there are nurses and nursing assistants who have previously worked in the health area and now work in other workplaces. We hope that some of them will want to come and help their former colleagues, says director of health and medical care Mikael Köhler.

They are mainly nurses and nursing assistants with experience in intensive care or inpatient care that the region is now requesting from Uppsala University Hospital and Enköping Hospital.

– We also hope that employers who have employees with the care experience we are looking for now will do their part by granting leave, says Mikael Köhler.

Infection among staff

At the time of writing, 99 covid-19 patients are being treated at Uppsala University Hospital and Enköping Hospital. Of these, 19 people require intensive care. Three people from Uppsala County are being treated in the intensive care unit in other counties, in order to relieve the University Hospital.

– We are approaching the spring loading in hospitals, in addition to the fact that regular operations are not closed as in April. That’s why it’s such a heavy burden, says Anna Gillman, the region’s infection control assistant.

At the same time, the infection spreads within the walls of the Academic Hospital. About twenty employees of the hospital’s child and adolescent psychiatry have fallen ill with covid-19.

– There is some spread of the infection in some units of the hospital. Then there will be a shortage of staff due to the infection and those who continue to work will find it even more difficult, says Anna Gillman and continues:

– Now they work hard so that the infection does not spread among the staff like icing on the cake. This is something we don’t need in this situation.
