Corona in Sweden: Åre’s alarm and Swedish ski resorts

Corona infection continues to increase in twelve of the 21 regions of the country. The biggest increase is in the Jämtland Härjedalen region, where several Swedish ski resorts are about to be fully booked. The Norrbotten region has also seen a further increase in corona infections.

Anders Nystedt is an infection control physician in the Norrbotten region. He sees a risk that so many have already planned their ski vacation in the mountains and that it is fully booked at various locations. He says there is a risk that people will begin to relax during their vacations, especially when alcohol is involved.

– It’s a risk. We see a lot of infections spreading in connection with travel, says Anders Nystedt.

– People who travel are a bit like people who go to the pub, you behave as usual. If you’re home on the gray day of the week on Monday, then it’s probably easier to stick to the rules of conduct, he says.

Responsibility rests with the individual

Anders Nystedt says the organizers have done their part to provide a contagious stay. But that the ultimate responsibility rests with the individual himself.

– It all still comes down to how the individual behaves. It may have rules, signs, and rubbing alcohol, but if the individual doesn’t follow the rules, things can go wrong, he says.

If there are many cases of infection, there is a risk that the Norrbotten region will be severely affected. This is why Anders Nystedt hopes that people will think before choosing to go to the mountains.

Should people consider a twist before going?

– Yes, and if you go, then you should keep thinking about how to behave during the trip, says Anders Nystedt, and continues:

– Everyone is welcome in the Norrbotten Mountains, but then you must follow the rules of conduct.

“Trying to equip ourselves”

Sofia Leje is Director of Operations at Åre Health Center. She says they have prepared for winter.

– We try to prepare for different scenarios, says Sofia Leje.

– Surely there will be many people in a small area, which implies challenges both for us in health and for the rest of society, he says.

He hopes that those who decide to climb the mountain will take responsibility and stay home when symptoms appear.

– We hope that people respect the guidelines of the Public Health Agency and assume the responsibility that the situation requires. Let everyone do their part to reduce the spread of the infection and thus ease local and regional medical care, he says.

The epidemiologist: “A favorable environment for the virus”

– You must be very vigilant and careful to make sure that the infection does not spread. It is known to be a favorable environment, especially in large collections, says Joacim Rocklöv, professor of epidemiology at Umeå University.

According to Joacim Rocklöv, it is important to be careful when hanging out in new groups or in large groups. This is where the greatest risk lies.

– You have to think twice before hanging yourself from an après ski, he says.
