Achieving herd immunity is an important part of Sweden’s strategy to combat coronary heart disease.
But now, the World Health Organization, WHO, is raising the alarm that there is no evidence that someone who has had covid-19 is protected against the disease.
If a large enough proportion of the population has had covid-19, it will protect even those who have not been sick. The objective of achieving herd immunity is a key part of the Swedish fight against pandemics. State epidemiologist Anders Tegnell has said models from the Public Health Agency suggest that Stockholm may reach him next month.
The strategy is based on the fact that the person who has had covid-19 develops antibodies that protect against the disease. But at a press conference Friday night, Maria Van Kerkhove, a WHO epidemiologist, came out and said there is no evidence that greedy patients develop immunity.
– Many countries are investing in antibody tests to try to measure immunity. Currently, we have no evidence that such a test can show that people are immune or protected against the disease.
She continued:
– These tests measure the level of antibodies, but that does not mean that someone who has antibodies is immune.

Sweden plans large-scale tests
Earlier on Friday, Karin Tegmark Wisell, chief medical officer and director of the Public Health Agency, stated that immunity tests will begin next week.
“If we have a situation this summer where we see that the spread of infection is very limited and a large proportion of the population is immune, then it is very possible that the restrictions that have been introduced could be alleviated,” he said.
Sampling will be carried out with the help of volunteer health reporters and the collection of blood samples from randomly selected people.
In addition, people in socially important activities will also be screened for the disease. According to Social Minister Lena Hallengren, 100,000 people can be tested every week. However, antibody measurement is not performed.
The texts are up to date.
